Baghdad — A settlement in Babylonia also known as Madinat-al-Salam
Madinat-al-Salam is the original core of Baghdad, built by the Abbasid Caliph al-Mansur in AD 762–767 as the official residence of the Abbasid court. Its official name in Abbasid times was The City of Peace ( Madīnat as-Salām).

The famous library known as the House of Wisdom was located within its grounds. In 1258, Baghdad was captured by the Mongols led by Hulegu, a grandson of Genghis Khan, during the siege of Baghdad.

The sack of Baghdad put an end to the Abbasid Caliphate, a blow from which the Islamic civilization never fully recovered.
